The Eight Thoughts™

The Ache

Lypē · Sorrow

You keep returning to a loss, a slight, or a version of your life that didn't happen.

Evagrius Ponticus listed this in the Egyptian desert around 375 AD, two centuries before the seven deadly sins existed. Later rolled into sloth, and the sorrow itself stopped being named.

What It Actually Is

Something is missing and you can name it exactly — a person, a time, a thing you were owed. The Ache keeps the file open, reviewing it, as though enough attention could still change the outcome. Evagrius thought this one usually starts somewhere else: a want that got blocked, or an anger you didn't get to spend.

How You'd Recognise It

  • — You reread old messages from a period you are no longer in
  • — A conversation from years ago replays with the volume still up
  • — A good moment arrives and you register mainly that it will end
  • — You keep a running account of what you were owed and didn't get

Set Against It

Every thought has a virtue that answers it rather than fights it. For this one, that is Gladness.
