The Eight Thoughts™
Porneia · Craving
You reach for a person, an image or a feeling as relief from something that has nothing to do with them.
Evagrius Ponticus listed this in the Egyptian desert around 375 AD, two centuries before the seven deadly sins existed. Lust, in the later seven.
This one is about wanting as an exit. When a day is flat or a thought is unbearable, attention slides toward someone — a person, a stranger, a version of a person you invented — and the wanting itself does the work of making you feel alive again. Evagrius was not interested in policing desire; he noticed that desire is the fastest available door out of a room you don't want to sit in.
Every thought has a virtue that answers it rather than fights it. For this one, that is Self-possession (sōphrosynē).
