The Eight Thoughts™

You keep building the buffer, and the buffer never quite reaches the size where you'd feel safe.
Evagrius Ponticus listed this in the Egyptian desert around 375 AD, two centuries before the seven deadly sins existed. Greed, the third of the seven.
You are not chasing luxury. You are chasing a number, a stocked cupboard, a backup plan — the point at which nothing can go wrong. What the desert noticed about this thought is that the target moves: every time you reach the figure that was going to be enough, a new figure quietly takes its place.
Every thought has a virtue that answers it rather than fights it. For this one, that is Open-handedness (aktēmosynē).
